As well as a daily asana and pranayama class, yoga nidra (relaxation), and meditation, the Living Consciously retreats include group discussions twice daily and up to 4½ hours of karma yoga – shared work in the activities of the ashram lifestyle.
Reflections on Living Consciously
We all experience days when the mind is clear and open and all aspects of life are in harmony. On the other hand, due mainly to the demands of everyday life, the mind frequently becomes busy and distracted resulting in an imbalance. It can feel as though you are on a roller coaster, riding up and down, with no control. This can cause extreme stress, unhappiness, and ill-health.

Earlier this year as the result of a job loss that impacted onto other areas of life, my life was out of balance. Not only that, I had relocated to Queensland which was unfamiliar territory to me, so I decided to relocate back to the Melbourne area to search for a new job. In the meantime I chose to attend the Living Consciously program at the Satyananda yoga ashram in Rocklyn. I turned my adversity into an opportunity to live in the ashram, and learn how to rebalance, reintegrate, regenerate, and rejuvenate. In addition to completing the Living Consciously program, I am privileged to have experienced the benefits of the yoga and meditation sessions, and the excellent library facilities. This discipline, and the ongoing study of the science of yoga, will be a part of my life wherever I go. It is a positive change in my life for which I am grateful. In addition to gaining from the benefits offered by the program my body has gained more flexibility and balance and I have become more aware of the integration of mind, heart, and actions that provides a more balanced and harmonious lifestyle.

The Living Consciously program incorporates four separate weekly sessions and focuses on helping you develop tools to enable you to create and maintain balance and harmony in your life, no matter what circumstances you are experiencing. It provides a systematic framework wherein you can develop skills in self-observation and awareness, and where you learn how to:

observe and become conscious of physical actions and sense experiences;

become aware of your thoughts, emotions, energy and its effects on the mind, and attitudes of positivity and negativity in daily life;
-
observe the way you act and question why you act that way when it makes no sense;
-
develop awareness of thought patterns, ongoing patterns in life, and create new patterns;
-
create regularity and simplicity in life;
-
explore the difference between acting and re-acting to situations;
-
witness and disidentify with attachment to people, things, and attitudes;
-
transform negatives to positives, and maintain balance in the face of difficulties;
-
flow with life without sinking into it;
-
find self-acceptance as a step to making lasting changes;
-
act with intuition and wisdom, beyond the confines of the ego;
-
close the gap between perception of your needs and the reality of what you actually do need in your life.

The benefits to be gained from attending this program cannot be obtained from reading books. They have to be experienced in person and sustained over time so you can experience peace and an evenness of mind amidst daily routines during both harmious and adverse circumstances. They enable you to experience wellness and be in control of your destiny rather than experiencing the uncontrollable roller-coaster ride. The teachers are full of wisdom and knowledge that they willingly and patiently share and encourage you to integrate new and positive experiences into your life in a supportive and safe environment.
